Benefits of Aluminum Body on Ford F-150 and Super Duty Trucks

High Strength Aluminum Alloy Body

The Ford F-Series is the best selling vehicle in history. Built tough, the pickup truck quickly earned a reputation for being reliable, capable, and getting the job done. Now both the F-150 and Super Duty have high strength aluminum bodies.

The F-150 truck got a major update for the 2015 model year with a new aluminum body. With a reduced body weight, increased capability, and better fuel efficiency than ever before, the Ford F-150 aluminum body has a variety of benefits.

The Ford F-150 features a cab and cargo box body made of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys. That's the same high-strength grade of aluminum used in aerospace, commercial transportation, and energy industries. The F-150 rides on a 78% high-strength steel frame with eight cross-members. Both stronger and more rigid, the frame is still 60 pounds lighter than its predecessor, offering consumers a total weight loss of 700 pounds. The aluminum body doesn't just reduce weight. It also improves the power-to-weight ratio to increase acceleration and pulling power as well as handling, braking, and even better efficiency.

The 2016 Ford F-150 earned Best in Class for Max payload capacity, fuel economy, and torque. The 2017 SuperCrew and SuperCab received the 2016 IIHS Top Safety Pick when equipped with optional forward collision warning.

Now the 2017 Ford Super Duty has a lighter all-new high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloy body. The weight savings was applied to where it counts the most in a work truck - stronger axles, beefier steering and chassis components, and an all-new fully boxed frame built of over 95 percent high-strength steel. The result is a pickup that's stronger than ever before, yet up to 350 pounds lighter, delivering class-leading payload and towing capability.

Ford's entire goal when creating the aluminum body was to reduce weight and increase strength simultaneously. The fact that the aluminum alloy is highly resistant to dents and corrosion is just an added bonus.
