Different Kinds of Brakes

Disc Brakes

Look through the hubcap of your car's front wheel and you can usually see a shiny metal disk just inside whick is called a Disk Brake.  When you step on the brake pedal a pad of hard wearing material clamps on to the brake disc and rubs it to make it slow down. You've seen this work on bicycle tire brakes.

Drum Brakes

Some cars have disc brakes on all four wheels but some have Drum Brakes on the rear wheels, which work in a slightly different way.  The drum brakes have shoes inside the hollow wheel hub that press outwards.  As the shoes push into the wheels, friction slows you down.
